Terrorists attack U.S.

In a horrific morning of destruction Sept. 11, terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in New York, knocking down the twin 110-story towers, and in Washington an airliner slammed into the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane, which authorities believe was headed for the White House, crashed outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The first plane to hit the World Trade Center struck at 8.45 a.m. and the second at 9:04 a.m.

The planes blasted fiery, gaping holes in the upper floors of the twin towers, the symbol of global capitalism, as people arrived for work

The southern tower collapsed with a roar about 10 a.m., followed 15 minutes later by its twin.

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani estimated that several thousand were killed in the attack on the World Trade Center. Asked about a report that the city had requested 6,000 body bags from federal officials, he replied, "Yes, I believe that's correct."

At the Pentagon, the military services said about 150 people — mostly Army soldiers — were unaccounted for, along with 64 passengers and crew from the plane that crashed into the building.

President George W. Bush was quick to condemn the attacks as an "act of war" and stated that the U.S. would "make no distinction" between terrorists and their hosts in the hunt for those responsible for the attacks

"These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat, but they have failed. Our country is strong. Terrorist acts can shake the foundation of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America," Bush said.

No one took responsibility for the attacks, but U.S. federal authorities identified Osama bin Laden, who has been given asylum by Afghanistan's Taliban rulers, as the prime suspect

As a sign of support, NATO invoked its mutual defense clause for the first time in its 52-year history, opening the way for a possible collective military response.
