Koizumi says SDF will back U.S. forces

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi pledged Sept. 19 to make any legal changes necessary to enable Japan's Self-Defense Forces to provide logistical support to the U.S. military

The support would come in the event of a retaliatory strike over the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We support the United States as an ally, and plan to provide as much support as possible," the prime minister stated.

Japan's assistance to the U.S. in the event of a military strike has been subject to debate, particularly over what role the SDF would play in the possible attack.

Koizumi has ruled out any activities that entail the use of military force because of Japan's war-renouncing Constitution.

Koizumi said the SDF would be dispatched to provide support in areas such as medical services, transportation and the shipment of supplies.

Among other measures announced was a plan to provide emergency economic assistance to Pakistan and India as part of efforts to promote their cooperation.

Koizumi is scheduled to visit the U.S. Sept. 24. He will meet with President George W. Bush in Washington on Sept. 25 to discuss the Sept. 11 attacks
