Israeli troops leave 2 West Bank towns

Under heavy U.S. pressure, Israel withdrew April 9 from two Palestinian towns, even as soldiers invaded another area of the West Bank and fierce fighting continued in the Jenin refugee camp.

Israeli troops remained in the towns of Nablus, Bethlehem, Jenin and Ramallah, while the siege of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, where more than 200 armed Palestinians are holed up, continued with no sign of a resolution.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said April 8 that the offensive would continue until Palestinian militias, responsible for a string of shooting and bombing attacks on Israelis, were crushed.

Israel said Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat would remain in isolation, although they have briefly eased his confinement ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's visit April 12.

Palestinians have threatened to boycott cease-fire efforts if Arafat is bypassed by the Secretary of State.

In a complaint to the Israeli government, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel said the Israeli military has committed serious human rights violations in the Jenin camp, including the demolition of homes with residents still inside.
