Israeli troops withdraw from Ramallah

Israel completed its pullout from the West Bank town of Ramallah May 2, the military said

Earlier, troops and tanks moved out of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound, lifting a siege that has lasted since March 29.

The pullout followed the implementation of a U.S.-brokered deal in which six Palestinians wanted by Israel were transferred into U.S. and British custody in the West Bank town of Jericho.

Arafat's first words to reporters after the siege was lifted were, "It is not important what happened to me here. What is important is what is happening in the Church of the Nativity. This is a crime."

The pullout came as a gun battle and fire broke out at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem

In another development, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan announced May 1 that he would disband the fact-finding mission to Jenin following Israel's refusal to cooperate

Jenin was the site of the fiercest fighting in the recent Israeli incursion into Palestinian territory.

Amnesty International claims it has found preliminary evidence of a massacre suggesting that Israeli soldiers have violated the Geneva Conventions.
