News'Indications' of al-Qaeda found in KashmirU.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said June 12 that al-Qaeda militants might be operating in Kashmir, adding an explosive element to the disputed region that has brought India and Pakistan near to war. "I have seen indications that there in fact are al-Qaeda operating in the area near the line of control" dividing disputed Kashmir, Rumsfeld told reporters in New Delhi. "I do not have hard evidence of precisely how many, or who, or where," added Rumsfeld, who had earlier warned that al-Qaeda might try to provoke a war between India and Pakistan. This came as the so-called "dirty bomber" U.S. citizen Jose Padilla, accused of plotting a radioactive bomb attack, was due to appear before a New York court. Padilla, who also goes by the name Abdullah al Mujahir, is suspected of links to Saudi-born, Islamic militant Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network, accused of having staged the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States Padilla has been held as an "enemy combatant" and denied legal rights given to suspects under U.S. law, since he was arrested on arrival at Chicago Airport on May 8 from Pakistan via Zurich
