'Chemical Ali' believed to be dead

Ali Hassan al-Majid, dubbed "Chemical Ali" by opponents of the Iraqi regime for ordering a poison gas attack that killed thousands of Kurds, was apparently killed by an airstrike on his house in Basra, British officials said April 7
Al-Majid was a first cousin of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who had entrusted him with defense of southern Iraq against invading American and British forces.
Al-Majid apparently was killed April 5 when two coalition aircraft used laser-guided munitions to attack his house.
One of the most brutal members of Hussein's inner circle, al-Majid led a 1988 campaign against rebellious Kurds in northern Iraq in which whole villages were wiped out. An estimated 100,000 Kurds, mostly civilians, were killed during that campaign.
He also has been linked to the bloody crackdown on Shiites in southern Iraq following a 1991 uprising in the wake of the Gulf War, where he was photographed executing rebels with pistol shots to their heads. He served as governor of Kuwait during Iraq's seven-month occupation of the emirate in 1990-1991.
