イスラエル軍がベツレヘムから撤退
イスラエル軍は2日、ベツレヘム中心部から撤退し、治安権限を自治政府へ引き継いだ。
Bethlehem handover boosts 'road map'
BETHLEHEM (AP) - Israeli patrols withdrew from the West Bank city of Bethlehem on July 2, clearing the way for Palestinians to resume security control in a deal both sides hope will advance a U.S.-backed "road map" to peace. Under the deal, Palestinian police will curb militants and prevent attacks on Israelis.
Bethlehem has been the scene of frequent clashes during the Palestinian uprising. A year ago, the Church of the Nativity, which according to Christian tradition stands over the birthplace of Jesus, was the site of a 38-day siege by Israeli forces when Palestinian militants took refuge inside.
The handover of the ancient town boosts hope for an end to 33 months of bloodshed, and comes three days after Israeli troops pulled out of some reoccupied areas in the northern Gaza Strip and transferred policing duties there to the Palestinian services.
That coincided with a truce announcement by most armed Palestinian factions, and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas pledged to jail militants who violate the ceasefire.
