(AP) - With wind-driven flames threatening the densely populated San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, firefighters dug in Oct. 29 for another brutal day battling one of the most destructive and deadly wildfire outbreaks in California history At least 20 deaths have been blamed on the fires, 18 in southern California and two in Mexico, as separate blazes were scattered along an arc from the suburbs northwest of Los Angeles to Ensenada, about 96 km south of the border More than 2,100 houses have been destroyed in California, and fires have burnt more than 248,000 hectares of brush, forest and homes Some of the fires were believed to be started by arsonists. Investigators are seeking two men who were seen throwing flaming objects from a van in the area of one of the fires A lost hunter's signal flare ignited the so-called Cedar Fire near the mountain town of Julian in San Diego County on Oct. 25. That fire, the state's largest at 100,000 hectares, killed 13 people. The hunter may face charges.
