Yoshinoya stops serving famed gyudon

Yoshinoya D&C Co. stopped serving its mainstay bowls of "gyudon" beef on rice Feb. 11 after stocks ran dry due to an import ban on U.S. beef.

It is the first time since Yoshinoya opened in 1899 that it has halted servings of gyudon. Smaller rivals such as Nakau and Sukiya stopped serving similar beef dishes the week before.

Due to its almost complete reliance on U.S. beef for its popular dish, the nation's largest gyudon restaurant chain has become a symbol of the beef shortage following the discovery of the first case of mad cow disease in the United States in December and the ensuing wrangling between Tokyo and Washington over the resumption of such imports.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Feb. 9 it is ending its search for additional cases of mad cow disease even though officials have not found all the animals they sought

"Our investigation is now complete," Ron De Haven, the department's chief veterinarian, said. "We feel very confident the remaining animals, the ones we have not been able to positively identify, represent little risk."

The closure leaves officials not knowing what happened to 11 head of cattle among 25 that authorities consider likely to have eaten the same potentially infectious feed that tested positive for mad cow

But the likelihood of finding more cases "is pretty slim at this point," De Haven said.
