米軍ファルージャを制圧
米軍は10日、イラク中部の都市・ファルージャへの総攻撃を開始し、街の70%を制圧した。
U.S. takes most of Fallujah
FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP) - U.S. forces cornered insurgents in Fallujah on Nov. 10 after a swift advance that seized control of 70 percent of the militant stronghold.
The speed of the U.S. drive may indicate that most militants had abandoned the city before the offensive. The most notorious kidnapper, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is believed to have fled the city.
Before the assault, military sources estimated 1,200 guerrillas were in Fallujah, with about 2,000 more nearby. It was unclear how many were left.
As of Nov. 9, 10 U.S. troops and two members of the Iraqi security forces had been killed in Fallujah.
Meanwhile, guerrillas accelerated attacks outside Fallujah, mainly targeting local police stations.
Gunmen also kidnapped three relatives of Prime Minister Ayad Allawi - his cousin, Ghazi Allawi, the cousin's wife and their daughter-in-law.
Troops have also reported finding abandoned "hostage slaughterhouses" in Fallujah where foreign captives had been killed.
