Quake-resistance data scam shakes nation

CHIBA (Kyodo) - The developer of three condominiums in Chiba Prefecture decided Nov. 23 to pull down the buildings because of concerns over their quake resistance.

The three Funabashi condos were designed based on Quake-resistance data allegedly falsified by architect Hidetsugu Aneha.

The three are among 16 buildings that may collapse in the case of an earthquake with an intensity of upper 5 on the Japanese scale.

Meanwhile, the operators of the three hotels said they will suspend operations as they have found that Aneha played a part in the construction of their properties.

The three are not among the 16 buildings in question.

Last month, Aneha admitted that he had falsified quake-resistance data for 21 buildings - 20 condominiums and a hotel.

The hotel, Keio Presso Inn Kayabacho, located in Tokyo's Chuo Ward and opened in August this year with 260 guest rooms, has suspended operations.

Investigations continue into other possible data falsification cases as Aneha has been involved in construction plans for about 90 buildings over the past five years.
