レバノン野党シリアに軍撤退要求
レバノンの野党各派は2日、国内からのシリア軍の完全撤退を要求した。
Lebanese opposition wants Syria out
BEIRUT (AP) - Bolstered by support from Arab countries, the Lebanese opposition March 2 demanded a "full" withdrawal of Syrian troops and intelligence agents from Lebanon.
Syrian President Bashar Assad had said his forces could leave Lebanon "maybe in the next few months. Not after that," but later backed off from the comments.
Lebanon's staunchly pro-Syrian president, Emile Lahoud, began the search for a new prime minister to replace Omar Karami, who resigned Feb. 28, amid opposition pressure to ensure the new government is not dominated by Syria.
Lebanon's worst political crisis in years has increasingly isolated Syria, with even its traditional ally Russia joining the United States, France and the United Nations in calling on Damascus to pull its 15,000 troops out of its neighbor, where it has wielded power for more than a decade.
The troops were originally deployed during Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war - as peacekeepers - and Syria has held sway over Lebanese politics ever since.
