Republican party in trouble

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Majority Leader Tom DeLay was indicted Sept. 28 on a charge of conspiring to violate political fundraising laws, forcing him to temporarily step aside from his GOP post

DeLay is the highest-ranking member of Congress to face criminal prosecution

The indictment comes as Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill First faces federal investigations into his stock sales.

DeLay and two of his political associates are charged with laundering campaign money through the Republican National Committee (RNC) in violation of Texas law

While not charged, longtime Bush adviser Terry Nelson is named in the indictment as the RNC official through whom the money flowed.

Bush, who rose to power in 2000 on a pledge to restore integrity to the Oval Office, now presides over a party rocked by controversy and uncertain of its future.

A series of events - the GOP scandals, the death toll in Iraq, the slow response to Hurricane Katrina and a decline in consumer confidence - has shifted the political landscape. Voters seem to be losing faith in their political leaders.
