スンニ派拘束者を虐待
イラク移行政府のジャファリ首相は15日、内務省の拘束施設でイスラム教スンニ派の拘束者170人あまりが、栄養失調の状態で見つかったことを明らかにした。
Sunni detainees tortured: Iraqi PM
BAGHDAD (AP) - Iraq's prime minister disclosed Nov. 15 that more than 170 starving Iraqi detainees were found at an Interior Ministry detention center and that some appeared to have been tortured.
U.S. and Iraqi forces discovered the detainees when they went into the facility suspecting that people there may have been mistreated. The prisoners were all Sunni Arabs.
Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said Iraqi authorities were investigating and the detainees had been moved to a better location and given medical care.
Amnesty International welcomed al-Jaafari's decision to order an investigation but urged him to expand the probe
The Interior Ministry is controlled by Shiites. Sunni leaders have accused Shiite-dominated security forces of detaining, torturing and killing hundreds of Sunnis because of their religious affiliation.
Most insurgents are Sunni Arabs, who were dominant under Saddam Hussein's regime but lost power after his ouster.
