Akiyoshi receives Jazz Masters Award

Jazz pianist and composer Toshiko Akiyoshi, 76, became the first Japanese to receive the Jazz Masters Award from the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. Akiyoshi moved to the United States at age 25, where she organized her own big band. Akiyoshi is also the first Japanese to enter the International Jazz Hall of Fame. (Kyodo)
