Japan recognizes 17th abductee

The government Nov. 20 formally recognized Kyoko Matsumoto as the 17th Japanese victim of North Korean abductions. A worker at a local clothing factory, Matsumoto went missing after leaving home in Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast at around 8 p.m. on Oct. 21, 1977, saying she was going to a knittingclass. She was then 29. Despite pressure from Japan to acknowledge the abduction, North Korea has denied that it abducted the woman. (Kyodo)
