Japan, EU agree to cut tuna fishing

Japan and the European Union agreed Jan. 31 to a plan to cut catches of highly valued bluefin tuna in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean by 23 percent over four years through 2010. This is part of a global effort to fight declining stocks of the fish due to overfishing. At the meeting in Tokyo of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, Japan agreed to reduce its catches to 2,175 tons during the period from 2,830 tons. (Kyodo)
