Rainy Tokyo Marathon draws 30,000

About 30,000 people from around the world ran through the rain Feb. 18 in the Tokyo Marathon, one of the largest marathons in Asia. The participants were picked by lot after 95,000 people applied. Daniel Njenga, a 30-year-old Kenyan runner and the 2004 Tokyo International Marathon champion, won the race among male runners with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 45 seconds. Hitomi Niiya, an 18-year-old from Okayama Prefecture, won the women's portion with a time of 2:31:01. (The Japan Times)
