Abe promises to review hibakusha health support

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised Aug. 5 to review criteria for recognizing whether hibakusha are eligible for special medical allowances. Of the 251,834 people certified as hibakusha as of March 31, the government has recognized only 2,242 as having radiation illnesses. Abe made the promise the day before the 62nd anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. (Kyodo)
