Japan suffers record-breaking heat

A scorching heat wave was blamed for at least 13 deaths between Aug. 14 and 16 as temperatures soared to record-breaking highs. The cities of Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, and Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, both experienced temperatures of 40.9 degrees Celsius on Aug. 16. The previous record-high temperature in Japan was 40.8 degrees in Yamagata Prefecture in 1933. A number of places have seen temperatures rise above 40 degrees over consecutive days. (Kyodo)

岐阜県多治見市と埼玉県熊谷市で8月16日、ともに国内最高気温となる40.9度が記録された。
