Japanese-Brazilian tried in Brazil
|
|
A Japanese-Brazilian being tried in Brazil over a 1999 hit-and-run in Shizuoka Prefecture, which killed a 16-year-old girl, admitted Feb. 6 to being involved and apologized to the victim's family. It is the first case in Brazil for a Brazilian to be prosecuted at the request of the Japanese authorities for a crime committed in Japan. Milton Noboru Higaki, who left Japan four days after the incident, said he did not stop the car because he feared that discrimination against foreigners in Japan would not allow him fair judicial treatment.
