U.S. submarine hits Japanese tanker

A U.S. nuclear-powered submarine collided Jan. 8 with Japanese oil tanker Mogamigawa in the Straits of Hormuz. No one was hurt in the accident, damage was light, and both ships remained able to navigate. U.S. naval vessels patrol the area around the Persian Gulf to block smuggling of weapons to Iraq and Somalia, nuclear components to Iran, and the movement of drug shipments and terrorists. It is not the first time that a U.S. navy vessel has collided with a ship. (AP)
