Thousands march at Armenian's funeral
More than 100,000 mourners marched Jan. 23 in a funeral for an ethnic Armenian journalist who had been killed after angering Turkish nationalists — an extraordinary outpouring of support for freedom of expression and reconciliation.
Hrant Dink was gunned down outside the office of his newspaper, Agos, on Jan. 19. He had been outspoken about the mass killings of ethnic minority Armenians in the last days of the Ottoman Empire, saying it was genocide — a sensitive topic in Turkey. As a result, Dink, like Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk, has been prosecuted under Turkish law for insulting "Turkishness."
