Olmert slammed over war in Lebanon
|
|
An Israeli government commission on Israel's war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon last year accused Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on April 30 of "severe failure," saying he hastily led the country into the conflict without a comprehensive plan.
Olmert and his defense minister, Amir Peretz, launched the conflict when Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers and killed three others in a cross-border raid on July 12.
Relying on massive airstrikes, Olmert said Israel would crush Hezbollah and force the return of the captured soldiers. Neither goal was accomplished.
Between 1,035 and 1,191 Lebanese civilians and combatants were killed, as were 119 Israeli soldiers and 39 civilians. (AP)
