Sudan agrees to joint A.U.-U.N. force

U.N. peacekeeping chief John-Marie Guehenno on June 13 called Sudan's acceptance of a joint A.U.-U.N. peacekeeping force of up to 19,000 troops "a significant step forward." Sudan has accepted the joint force to replace the 7,000-strong A.U. force now in Darfur.

The ill-equipped and underfunded A.U. force has been unable to stop four years of warfare that have left more than 200,000 dead. (AP)
