U.N. inspector optimistic about N. Korea

North Korea is committed to closing its main nuclear reactor within a month as long as Washington drops financial sanctions, the chief U.N. nuclear inspector said March 14 after a one-day trip to Pyongyang

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Mohamed ElBaradei offered an encouraging assessment of the month-old nuclear disarmament pact. He said that North Korean officials were committed not only to shutting down the Yongbyon reactor but also to welcoming back U.N. inspectors.

But North Korean officials told ElBaradei they were waiting for the United States to drop financial sanctions that include a freeze on overseas assets.

A particularly sore spot for North Korea has been the freezing of accounts in a bank in the Chinese territory of Macau, which may include more than $25 million (¥2.8 billion) in North Korean assets. (AP)
