U.S. subprime loan crisis hits banks

Japan's six biggest banks reported yen 529.1 billion in losses at the end of December. This is 4.6 times the amount they reported at the end of September, when they said they had lost yen 115 billion. The six banks' losses could rise by another yen 100 billion by the end of March. The U.S. subprime loan crisis seriously affected four of the six banks — Mitsu-bishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, and Sumitomo Trust and Banking Co.
