Toshiba out of DVD format war
|
|
Toshiba bowed out of a long-running DVD format war with Sony on Feb. 19. This has left about one million people around the world with expensive machines that are now obsolete.
Toshiba said it would stop selling its HD DVD machines by the end of March. Sony's Blu-ray format will become the industry standard.
Both Warner Brothers and Wal-Mart supported Blu-ray. This was a major reason why Toshiba decided to stop selling HD DVD machines.
The victory is sweet revenge for Sony. In the late 1970s, Sony lost a similar format war between the VHS and Betamax types of video cassette. (AP)
