Unkei sculpture sells for $14. 3 million

A newly discovered wooden sculpture of Dainichi Nyorai, or the supreme Buddha, sold for $14.3 million (¥1.4 billion) at Christie's in New York on March 18.

The sculpture is attributed to Unkei, who is considered to be one of the best sculptors of the early Kamakura Period.

It was bought by department store chain Mitsukoshi Ltd. The presale estimate was less than $2 million (¥200 million). (AP)
