Lay judge system to start next year
|
|
The lay judge system, in which citizens will serve as jurors in trials involving serious crimes, will start May 21, 2009, the government said April 8.
The system will apply to indictments filed May 21 or after, so the first trial with lay judges will not be held until late July or early August next year.
Under the system, six eligible voters will work with three professional judges at district courts to decide whether a person is guilty or not.
But according to an Asahi newspaper poll, only around 15 percent of citizens want to take part. (Kyodo News)
