Earthquake in Japan could cost trillions
|
|
A magnitude-7.6 earthquake in the Kansai and Chubu regions could cause around ¥107 trillion in damage, the government said May 14.
Osaka could suffer ¥74 trillion in damage, and Nagoya ¥33 trillion. Around 5.5 million people would have to be evacuated from Osaka and 2.5 million from Nagoya.
The damage would be high because there are many wooden buildings that are not protected against earthquakes.
If a similar earthquake hit Tokyo, it could cost around ¥106 trillion. (Kyodo News)
