Oita in exam bribery scandal
Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura expressed regret July 9 over a corruption scandal involving the recruitment of teachers in Oita Prefecture. Police have arrested five people for bribery involving a recruitment exam for public elementary school teachers. In one case, the parents of a 23-year-old woman gave education officials bribes worth ¥1 million to ensure she passed. (Kyodo News)
