Japanese journalists beaten in China

A Nippon Television Network reporter and a Chunichi Shimbun photographer were detained and beaten by police Aug. 4 as they tried to cover a deadly attack on police in northwest China. Neither was seriously injured. The Japanese government lodged a protest over the incident, and Chinese police apologized Aug. 5 for the incident. Neither journalist could speak Chinese. (Kyodo News)
