Opposition wins elections in Taiwan

Taiwan's opposition Nationalist Party won a landslide victory in legislative elections Jan. 12. The Nationalist Party is in favor of closer ties with China.
President Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been criticized for aggravating relations with China. Chen has promoted policies to make Taiwan independent of China.
Chen resigned as DPP chairman after the results of the election became clear. But he will continue as president for another two months.
The Nationalist Party won 81 seats out of 113, while the DPP won only 27. (AP)
台湾総選挙、野党・国民党が圧勝
1月12日、台湾で総選挙が行なわれ、野党・国民党が圧勝した。台湾の独立を掲げ、結果的に中国との関係を悪化させた陳水扁総統の与党・民進党(DPP)は大きく議席を失った。
