East Timor was under a state of emergency Feb. 12 after rebel soldiers shot President Jose Ramos-Horta and attacked Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
Ramos-Horta was taken to Australia. Doctors said he was "extremely lucky to be alive," although in serious condition. Gusmao was unhurt.
East Timor is a poor Southeast Asian country of 1 million people. It became independent of Indonesia in 2002, but the situation has remained unstable.
