Ruling party loses in Pakistan elections
|
|
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's ruling party suffered a major defeat in parliamentary elections Feb. 18.
The elections saw major gains for the parties of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Musharraf's future as president is now in doubt.
Islamic hard-liners fared badly in the elections.
Analysts have said the elections were basically fair.
The elections are a major step toward democracy in Pakistan, which has been under military rule for over half of its 60-year history. (AP)
