Norway builds 'doomsday' seed vault

A "doomsday" seed vault has been built to protect millions of food crops from climate change, nuclear wars and natural disasters.

The vault opened Feb. 26 deep inside an Arctic mountain in Svalbard, Norway.

The vault can store about 4.5 million seed samples. The vault will be used as a backup for hundreds of other seed vaults around the world.

Countries can put seeds in this vault without charge. They can take them out whenever they want to. The seeds can be used if a plant disappears from its natural environment or destroyed by a disaster.

Svalbard is cold, but giant air-conditioning machines have cooled the air to around minus-20 degrees Celsius. Scientists say the seeds could last up to 1,000 years there. (AP)
