Beijing cracks down on pollution
|
|
Three weeks before the Olympic Games open in the world's most polluted city, the Chinese government will be shutting down factories and stopping construction work in Beijing.
There are about 3.5 million cars in Beijing. This number grows by around 1,200 each week. The Chinese government will force half of these off the road during the Games.
Scientists have recently tested the air in Beijing and said that pollution levels are five times higher than safety standards set by the World Health Organization.
China has spent around ¥2 trillion since 1998 to clean up the city. (AP)
