Anti-foreigner violence in South Africa has claimed at least 42 lives and displaced about 16,000 people, sources said May 21.
Aid groups say most of the violence has been by groups of poor native South Africans targeting Zimbabweans, Malawians, Mozambicans and other foreigners living in slums.
South Africa is wealthier than its neighbors but it suffers high unemployment, rising food prices and housing problems.
