North Korea on June 27 blew up the cooling tower of its Yongbyon atomic reactor to show that it was committed to nuclear disarmament.

This came a day after North Korea submitted a long-awaited declaration of its nuclear activities.

The United States lifted some trade sanctions against the poor and isolated state, and said it would remove North Korea from its list of terrorism-sponsoring states.

The Yongbyon atomic reactor, which had become a symbol of the country's nuclear activities, had produced plutonium for a program that led to a nuclear test in October 2006. (AP)
