Takashi Kawamura, an independent backed by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), won a landslide victory April 26 in the Nagoya mayoral election.
The victory by Kawamura, a 60-year-old former House of Representatives member, is a relief for the DPJ and its leader, Ichiro Ozawa, who has been hit by a fundraising scandal, ahead of a general election that must be called by the fall.
Kawamura said voters have welcomed his pledge to reduce the local residence tax.
"I will definitely carry it out," he said after securing the victory. (Kyodo News)
