Japan must not turn a blind eye to China's suppression of ethnic minorities and should take on the responsibility of assisting them, the president of the World Uighur Congress said July 29. Rebiya Kadeer, 62, who heads the Uighur rights movement, called on Japan to investigate the July 5 Urumqi riot that left nearly 200 dead and 1,800 wounded. Meanwhile, China summoned the Japanese ambassador to Beijing and filed a protest over Kadeer's visit. (The Japan Times, Kyodo News)
