Winny software developer acquitted

The Osaka High Court on Oct. 8 acquitted the developer of the Winny file-sharing software program of copyright violation, reversing a guilty ruling by a lower court that imposed a 1.5 million yen fine. Isamu Kaneko, 39, who published the software on his Web site in May 2002, was accused of assisting two users illegally make files available for download in September 2003 in violation of copyrights. The former University of Tokyo researcher pleaded not guilty, questioning whether engineers should be punished when their technologies are misused. (Kyodo News)
「ウィニー」開発者に逆転無罪
大阪高裁は10月8日、ファイル共有ソフト「ウィニー」の開発者が著作権法違反関連の罪に問われた裁判で、罰金刑とした一審判決を棄却し、無罪判決を言い渡した。
