Deadly gun rampages rock U.S., Germany
Eleven people including the gunman and his mother were killed in a shooting spree and car chase in southern Alabama on March 10, authorities said. In the span of about an hour, Michael McLendon, 28, set his home on fire, killed five relatives and five bystanders and committed suicide in a standoff at a metals plant where he had been forced to resign years ago. It was not clear how long McLendon had been planning the attack, or why.
Meanwhile in southwestern Germany, a 17-year-old burst into classrooms at his former high school March 11 and gunned down students in a rampage that ended with 15 dead before he took his own life, authorities said. The gunman's victims were primarily female: eight of nine students killed were girls, and all three teachers were women. Three men were also killed, apparently at random, as the suspect fled. (AP)
