米上院議員、AIG重役に「切腹」示唆
バラク・オバマ米大統領とその政権は、緊急援助を受けた保険大手AIGが幹部に巨額のボーナスを支払うと発表したことで批判を受け、対応を余儀なくされている。
U.S. senator suggests harakiri for AIG execs
U.S. President Barack Obama and his administration were forced to grapple with growing criticism of the government's handling of the bailout program, which allowed insurance giant American International Group Inc. to borrow billions from the U.S. Treasury and then announce that it plans to go ahead with paying out some $165 million in bonuses to executives.
Outrage over the bonuses reached new heights March 16, as Republican Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley suggested executives take responsibility the "Japanese way":
"If they'd follow the Japanese example and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say, I'm sorry, and then either do one of two things: resign or go commit suicide. And in the case of the Japanese, they usually commit suicide before they make any apology,'' Grassley said. (AP)
