Pope visits Israel, occupied territories

Pope Benedict XVI told Palestinians on May 13 he understands their suffering and offered the Vatican's strongest and most symbolic public backing yet for an independent Palestinian homeland. Earlier in the pope's visit to the Holy Land, critics faulted him for failing to apologize in a speech at Israel's Holocaust memorial for what they see as Catholic indifference during the Nazi genocide.
