National News Takahashi wins bronze, makes Games history

Daisuke Takahashi overcame a fall on his opening quadruple jump with a solid free skate to claim the men's figure skating bronze medal at the Vancouver Olympics on Feb. 18.

Takahashi, who was third after the Feb. 16 short program, scored a total of 247.23 points to give Japan its third medal of the Games and first ever for men in the event.

The medal win put the gloss on the 23-year-old's comeback season after being sidelined with a knee injury in the 2008-2009 season.

American Evan Lysacek came from behind to win the gold, while 2006 Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia took silver.

Meanwhile, Japan was unable to win medals in curling and team ski jumping. On Feb. 23, Japan's women's curling team fell to defending champion Sweden 10-6 and dropped its win-loss record to 3-5 in the round robin, eliminating it from the playoffs.

In team ski jumping, Japan came up short Feb. 22 in its bid for a first Olympic team ski jumping medal since 1998, finishing fifth at Whistler Olympic Park. The team finished with a total of 1,007.7 points. (Kyodo News, AP)
