About 20 percent of the world's 25,000 vertebrate species are threatened with extinction, the International Union for Conservation of Nature said Oct. 27, while noting that conservation efforts have yielded some positive results.
The group's Red List of Threatened Species, which classifies species into several categories in the order of their extinction risks, was released in Nagoya, where countries are trying to devise new international targets to halt the loss of biodiversity. The latest assessment shows nearly 4,900 vertebrate species under threat. (Kyodo News)
