Cheap, disposable lighters face ban

Sales of disposable lighters will officially be banned from next Sept. 27, as they have been designated harmful products under the Consumer Products Safety Act, the government said Nov. 5. The sales ban on disposable 100 yen lighters comes after a series of accidental fires caused by children playing with them, said the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Disposable lighters may be sold if they meet safety standards, for example, making the ignition lever heavier. (Kyodo News)
