Lay judges OK with death penalty

Amnesty International Japan took a street poll in the Shibuya district of Tokyo on Feb. 20 asking people whether they would be prepared to hand down the death sentence if they are selected as a lay judge, and most indicated they could, the international human rights group said. According to the poll, 110 people said they could sentence someone to hang, 97 said they couldn't and 33 said they weren't sure, Amnesty said. (Kyodo News)
